I can’t believe this needs to be said, but…

- Withholding medication from a disabled person is not a joke, it’s not a punishment, it’s abuse.

- Withholding mobility equipment from a disabled person is not a joke, it’s not a punishment, it’s abuse.

- Withholding stim toys, comfort items or similar from a disabled person is not a joke, it’s not a punishment, it’s abuse.

- Stopping a disabled person from using harmless routines or coping mechanism is not a joke, it’s not a punishment, it’s abuse.

Some points from a physically disabled and chronically ill person:

- Don’t ever lean on a wheelchair. It’s like leaning against a stranger’s back.

- Don’t ever push a wheelchair user without asking first. It’s like shoving an able bodied person out of your way instead of politely asking.

- Don’t talk to the person pushing the wheelchair if the person in it has started the conversation, paid for something, ordered etc. Their body isn’t working, their brain is often perfectly fine.

- If you see someone in a wheelchair who is non verbal, don’t assume they’re mentally disabled and talk over them. It’s incredibly rude. Even if they can’t understand you, talk to them like a human being, not a vegetable.

- If you see a person using a wheelchair stand up and/or walk, don’t assume they are faking. You don’t have to be paralysed to need help with mobility. Some people may have severe pain, breathing issues, weakness, heart issues etc. Just because they can feel their legs, that doesn’t make them a malingerer.

- Don’t assume that benefit fraud is a big problem, whatever the right wing media says. Recently in the UK, they found that - on average - people thought disability/illness benefit fraud ran at around 24% of people getting benefits. It’s actually less than 0.7% - and that includes errors made by the government agencies as well as overpayment while the recipient waits for the agencies to correct things after a change in circumstances. And the number of people who aren’t claiming benefits they are entitled to because of shame, fear or the agencies involved having something like a 70% error rate when they refuse applications far outnumbers the tiny number of deliberate malingerers.

- If you see somebody park in a disabled bay with a valid parking badge, do not EVER assume they are a fraud, let alone challenge them or write them a miserable anonymous letter. Not all disabilities are visible. Not all mobility issues require a wheelchair (or even walkers or crutches). And certainly, in the UK, it’s perfectly valid for an able bodied person to park a car in a disabled bay with a badge if they are collecting the person who owns the badge. How DARE you judge what you cannot see? I don’t care if you think you are “protecting the Real Disabled™ from scroungers”. You aren’t. You’re hurting people with enough to deal with already.

- Don’t ever confuse addiction and dependence when it comes to opioid pain medication. A pain patient taking their medicine as prescribed, and only for the approved condition(s) is almost never addicted. Addiction is using a medication or drug to escape from psychological issues, not controlling legitimate physical pain. Dependence is a natural part of taking many medications, from steroids for asthma or inflammatory bowel disease to anticonvulsants for epilepsy or pain. It simply means that your body has adjusted to the presence of the medication and you need to stop it slowly if you no longer need it. You wouldn’t accuse somebody with asthma of being an addict, so don’t accuse pain patients of it either.

There’s a whole lot more that I could add, but this is far too long already. Basically, you just need to treat disabled people as human beings and assume good faith. By doing anything mentioned in this thread, dismissing the person’s opinion or minimising the upset you may have caused, you are simply perpetuating abusive, ableist behaviour. It shouldn’t need to be said.
